The famous Kasuga restaurant is situated at a privileged location in Colonia Americana in Guadalajara, inside of a landmark building located in La Paz Avenue. The restaurant’s goal is to create an attractive and versatile ambiance that invites guests to extend their stay from day to night, enjoying a relaxed experience together with a sense of privacy.

“ We aimed to enhance the user experience by embracing traditional methods that not only respect the craft's heritage but also add a unique aesthetic and functional value to the final product. A key element of our approach was the adoption of the Shou Sugi Ban process, a revered Japanese technique used for preserving and finishing wood.”
Shou Sugi Ban, meaning "burnt cedar board," is a traditional Japanese wood treatment that chars wood to preserve it. Traditionally, this involves creating a triangular formation with three planks and igniting the interior, ensuring an even char. After the charring, the wood is cooled and cleaned, brushed and washed to bring out the texture and grain. Finally, an oil finish is applied to seal the wood and enhance its rich, charred appearance.
How to generate a private while attractive experience being in a courtyard? This was one of the greatest challenges in the design of the project, with the formal approach and the design process using structural elements and construction methods that helped to blur the boundary between architecture and interior design. As a result, the idea emerged of a double-height space with a porticoed structure and lush vegetation.
Surrounded by exuberant vegetation, the terrace becomes the true heart of the project, creating an environment hard to imagine on the inside of an old casona. This space benefits from the double height and patio location to surprise guests with a glazed atrium structure offering open views to a lush vegetation.
